My new ballgown! [Mar. 23rd, 2009|12:01 pm]
A place for Young Re-enactors to Connect

It's show-off time

The front view of the new ballgown

The back view, with my hair.

The whole effect...the girl who took the picture said I looked like something out of a BBC drama. I just think I look confused. "Whaaaaat?"

What can I say...I'm such a tart.

These were taken at my club's annual formal ball, which was held last weekend. I'm probably a little bit spoiled - when I went to my first "battlefield ball", where they did the Patty-cake polka, I was like, "Wait...this is no ball!"

The ballroom was lit by candles, and everyone wore silk gowns. We all used dance cards - that's right, gentlemen had to ask for the honor of the dance beforehand. Everyone used their best etiquette. There were 20 dances . Even those who can't get enough of dancing were finally ready to collapse when we finished at 12:30 in the morning.

I said that night, "There's no need to be modest, I know I'm a pretty pretty princess." The dress has been in the works since August. There are a few things I know I would change, but most of them were an issue from losing weight in between starting and finishing. But I really felt like Cinderella at the ball - I was called "radiant" and "simply lovely - just like a fashion plate".

The fabric is a lightweight silk taffeta. The trim is box-pleated heavy taffeta (it's technically a changeable taffeta - the warp is a blue-green, the weft is black, making for a navy blue). There is a bow at each shoulder seam and three roses at the v of the bodice.

I simply had to share!

cross posted in a few places.

thank you! I did make it myself - the pattern is the Past Patterns ballgown bodice, modified to fit me - which mostly involved lengthening the whole thing as I'm kind of gangly. No pattern for the skirt - just four panels, double box pleated and sewn to the waistband. The trim was my own imagination with some references to originals.

Oh thank you, I'm blushing! I'm not being modest when I say there were even more stunning dresses than mine at the ball. Some real works of art!

I did get your letter, and sent mine on Thursday!

Also, the hair is fake. Don't tell anyone! :) I have a very modern haircut (just above my shoulders) and fake hair is a godsend.
